CARA's Marathon Tune Up Program with Coach Bill Leach

Overview

This special, five-week session is designed for anyone who is training for The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on October 13 (or other event on or around this date).

It features elements of two popular CARA programs with Coach Bill Leach – Peak Performance and Speed Training Techniques . The new program will combine core strength training and running workouts at a level that is appropriate for this phase of your marathon preparation (September 9 through October 10).

Core strength training features a series of unique exercises targeting the muscles of the hips, abdomen, back, and middle and upper torso. A stronger "core" will help you:

  • increase your overall conditioning and running performance
  • enhance your flexibility
  • reduce your risk of injury
  • Workouts will include a varied circuit of drills using training tools such as resistance bands, balance boards, and other props, as well as techniques that simply leverage your own body weight. These exercises will improve your strength, balance, coordination, flexibility - and, ultimately, your running performance.

    In addition, Coach Leach will integrate a running program that includes popular "speed training" techniques to enhance your conditioning. Again, this component will be at a level that is suitable for you as you move from the peak phase of your marathon preparation into your taper.

    Location

    Workouts will be held on the lakefront running path in Lincoln Park (Chicago). Meet at the CARA bulletin board which is located next to the path just south of Diversey and east of Lake Shore Drive West. ( get a map)

    We meet rain or shine unless lightning is present. The decision to cancel a workout will be made on site based on conditions at that immediate time. Sorry, no make-ups will be held.

    It's best if you come already dressed for your workout. However, if you need to change on site, there is a Chicago Park District field house with bathrooms next to the golf driving range just northeast of the meeting spot (unfortunately, this facility may not be open during the AM sessions). No formal gear check is available, though many participants store their gear next to the running path.

    Metered parking is available where Diversey meets the park. Other street parking is limited.

    A special Saturday morning (8:30 AM) bonus workout will also be offered. Details will be provided when the program begins.

    On site – You may bring your completed form with payment to the first session, or you may fill out a form when you get there.

    Sorry, no refunds will be provided in full or in part for any reason, including injury, after a program begins. No prorated fees are provided for late enrollments. You must be at least 18 years of age and complete an entry form and waiver.
