Description:
These programs are a great way to get ready for your first 5k or 10k race, and to keep
your training going during the fall season. Each program consists of eight weekly clinics
followed by group training runs.
Beginner, 5k, and 10k participants meet together for the clinic portion and then split
into their respective groups for their workout. Clinics are presented by experienced runners
or professionals in each field. Topics include:
- Goals
- Shoes
- Stretching and core strengthening
- Injury prevention
- Running form
- Safety issues
- Nutrition
- Continuing to run
The running portion is held in Lincoln Park. Each group is typically accompanied by at
least two group leaders -- one who stays toward the front of the group and one who stays
toward the back -- though we always strive to get as many volunteers as possible. These
group leaders are experienced runners, and many are alumni of the program. They are there
to guide you through the run, provide support, and answer questions you may have to the
best of their ability.
First-time participants will also receive a Coolmax CARA training singlet, a booklet of
handouts, a training guide by Hal Higdon, and Fitness Running by Richard C. Brown and
Joe Henderson. Participants who repeat the 5k or 10k program receive the program booklet
and schedule only. Alumni (Beginning Running participants enrolling in 5k Training, or 5k
Training participants enrolling in 10k Training) will receive all materials along with a
substitute book as needed.
Be sure you come ready to run (i.e., wear or bring your running gear). You will be able
to store your belongings in the auditorium during the running portion. The overall length of
each session will vary depending on the workout for that week. The total time including the
clinic and the run is usually approximately 90 minutes, but varies depending on pace and
distance for a given workout.
At the conclusion of the program, the groups will be invited to participate in the
Lincolnwood Turkey Trot 5k and 10k races on Sunday, November 18. (the race fee is not
included in this program)
The initial workout for 5k participants includes a 1.5-mile run and the initial workout
for 10k participants includes a 3-mile run. For each respective program, you should be
able to complete a continual run at the distance shown. Please use these guidelines as a
basis for selecting the program that is right for you. However, if you are entered in one
program and decide a different level is more suited to your abilities, you may switch.
