Marathon Training Runs

Training with a group is a great way to get through those challenging distance runs, both mentally and physically. Registered participants may run at any location on any given weekend during the program.

In order to enhance your opportunity for success, we strongly encourage you to have an adequate training base in place before entering the program. We recommend the following 3 requirements prior to entering the program:

  • You have been running consistently for at least one year
  • You are running at least 18 miles per week on a regular basis
  • You have completed one run of six miles or more within the previous month

Distances
The first training run is 6 miles for beginning marathoners, 8 miles for intermediate, 10 miles for advanced participants. The longest run is twenty miles. Novice groups will run this distance one time, intermediate two times, and advanced, three times. View the schedules. This program features running only. Our program does not incorporate walking with the exception of when groups stop for Gatorade and water during the weekend long runs.

Pace Groups
A variety of pace groups will be available, and each one is headed by a Pace Group Leader. These Pace Group Leaders are experienced marathoners. They are there to coach you along the course, provide support, and answer questions you have to the best of their ability.

The number of pace groups may vary by site, but generally range from 7:30 per mile up to 12:00 minutes per mile. Don't worry – we will provide you with guidelines to help you determine which pace is right for you, and you can switch pace groups if you decide you want to run faster or slower.

Weekend Long Run Locations & Dates
When you register, you will be asked to select a preferred weekend training run site. However, you may run at any site during the program. Details on the meeting location for each site will be provided at the Super Clinic, and in your Participant Information Guide which will be found in your packet. No packets will be available at training run sites, so be sure to take care of your packet pick up as early as possible.
